Azbil Announces Support for Keidanren’s Revised Declaration of Biodiversity

TOKYO, Jun. 17, 2020: Azbil Corporation (Tokyo Stock Exchange Code: 6845) announced its support for the “Declaration of Biodiversity by Keidanren and Action Policy” (Revised Edition). Azbil will support the points outlined in the revised declaration and, based on its corporate philosophy of “human-centered automation,” is working worldwide to integrate environmental concerns into its management, with the goal of realizing a sustainable society while using the SDGs as a new set of guideposts. The following initiatives illustrate how Azbil is integrating environmental concerns into its management.

Solving Environmental Issues through Business (example of contributing to biodiversity conservation)

Azbil provides solutions for ballast water^* treatment systems, which are required by the Ballast Water Management Convention for large vessels, utilizing knowledge and know-how cultivated in the ship business, and products conforming to ship certification.

* Seawater is loaded into the bottom of large vessels to stabilize the hull when there is no cargo. Ballast water is considered to be a cause of invasive species dispersal because it contains marine life like zooplankton, phytoplankton, seaweed fragments, etc., which are released along with the water.

Communicating Biodiversity Initiatives to Business Partners (improving the supply chain)

The azbil Group distributes to its business partners literature titled “azbil Group Request for Biodiversity Conservation Action,” which explains the Group’s stance on biodiversity conservation, the relationship between Azbil’s business activities and biodiversity, and examples of initiatives.

Environmental Conservation Activities (cooperating with local partners)

In cooperation with NPOs, universities, and local governments, the azbil Group is helping to preserve nature in areas and offices where azbil Group bases are located. (The entire azbil Group has been working on this since 2011.)

Background of the Revised Declaration and Key Points

In 2009, Keidanren established the Declaration of Biodiversity with the aim to have companies take voluntary and proactive actions towards realizing harmonization between the environment and economy, and made this the organization’s basic principle. Taking the UN’s 2015 adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as an opportunity, Keidanren started working toward the SDGs through the realization of Society 5.0 and put forth the idea of “Integrated Environmental Corporate Management,” which encompasses various environmental and business initiatives. In 2018, Keidanren revised the declaration and action plan to include the following points.

Azbil’s Initiatives for Integrated Environmental Corporate Management

Based on its corporate philosophy of “human-centered automation,” Azbil has endeavored to integrate measures to deal with climate change, resource circulation, and biodiversity conservation, and has integrated a wide range of environmental activities with business activities. The azbil Group has proactively undertaken measures to deal with climate change at its bases worldwide focused on conserving energy and electricity, as well as contributing to the reduction of CO2 at customers’ work sites. In working toward the company’s long-term vision of achieving substantially zero emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) by 2050, Azbil’s GHG emission\s reduction targets for 2030 were approved by the Science Based Target initiative^*1.

Azbil contributes to building a society that circulates resources during new product development by incorporating energy-saving designs as well as establishing goals to incorporate resource-saving designs that reduce the amount of resources required by products and recycling-focused designs that reduce the amount of waste materials when disposing of products.

For measures that deal with biodiversity conservation, Azbil showed support for the Declaration of Biodiversity by Keidanren in 2009, and as a partner for the promotion of the declaration, the azbil Group is solving environmental issues through its business and is helping to preserve nature in areas and offices where azbil Group bases are located.
